So those things all together just triggered in me this desire to write a story that would tell the complexities of being a black person in America, trying to live your life. 3 was poor Trayvon Martin, and that whole era when America is seeing what happens to this kid, and me watching the divided perspectives on what happened: people saying that he deserved what he got, and people saying he was just a child who was murdered by an adult. And then I had this character who had appeared in some vignettes I had written, not complete stories, and I loved his voice and his perspective so much, his way of approaching the world, but I didn’t have a story for him. I remember reading the book and thinking, “This is the first time I’ve seen the experience of a black man depicted in fiction so well.” As a writer, I always wanted to do that myself somehow. One is “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison, which I read in my early 20s. What was the origin of “We Cast a Shadow”? How did that premise initially occur to you? ![]() ![]() ![]() I can imagine Attolia by the coast and picture the mountains running through this world that forge geographical, political and cultural boundaries. There is no map provided in these books (at least not in my editions) but the parts of the world that we have explored so far are completely imaginable to me. It's like the excitement of walking through a wardrobe into the strange land of Narnia and not knowing what's around every corner, but needing to find out. They don't say how this intricate fantasy world pulls you in with it's politics, it's culture and it's superstitions. and yep, this was amazing! I mean, what do you say that actually means anything? I could ramble on about fantastic writing, brilliant characters, excellent plot, this would all be true but the words are so empty and don't convey what I love about this series. ![]() It's weird how I find the most difficult books to review are those that I knew were going to be amazing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Readers who enjoy being frightened will want to jump into Hansel and Gretel’s fairy tale story. They just can’t seem to find a family that has caring parents.Ī Tale of Dark and Grimm describes a world full of terrible monsters, evil humans, and violent death. Parents and many adults are portrayed in a negative light, which is the main reason Hansel and Gretel continue to run away. Many scenes are described in bloody detail, and there is no shortage of scary characters, including an evil witch, the moon, and the Devil. Like the title suggests, Gidwitz’s version of Hansel and Gretel is both dark and grim. Gidwitz retells the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel, plus expertly weaves pieces of other fairy tales into Hansel’s and Gretel’s story. As the children run, they encounter witches and warlocks, hunters with deadly aim, and a baker with ovens that are just right for baking children.
